Formal Dancing In Intermediate/Primary schools

By Bena Jackson

On December the 14th at 7pm the year 7 and 8 pupils at Opawa School will be taking part in the school formal. They have been learning formal dances all term such as, The Gay Gordon, The Boston Two step, the Ball and Jack and of course the Waltz.

Not only is the formal a nice social way to farewell the year 8’s who are moving on to high school, it’s also a great enjoyable fitness programme. Although the children enjoy the dancing they can be a little hesitant about asking the other children to dance, but they build more confidence as the practises continue.

The afternoon of the formal the year 8s will go to QEII whilst the new year 7 leadership team have their first experience of being in charge when the get to decorate the hall for the year 8s. All the girls really enjoy the shopping and preparation to the formal, although the boys approach it more warily they still enjoy the experience.

The formal was great fun last year and all the year 7&8s look forward to it this year.
